Did you know that if you were born in 1950, your life expectancy
Speaker:was only around 46 years.
Speaker:Wow.
Speaker:However, if you're born in 2022, you can expect to live almost 73 years,
Speaker:even though that's a huge increase in only 70 years, we're still not that
Speaker:close to living 100 years or more.
Speaker:However, there are certain parts of the world known as blue zones,
Speaker:where many of their inhabitants live well into their 100.
Speaker:In this episode, I'll share some secrets that they have to living beyond 100
Speaker:I'm Amin, Ahmed, and welcome to be well do well off the coast of Japan lies.
Speaker:OK.
Speaker:Okinawa on a string of islands known for its tropical climate
Speaker:beaches and coral reefs.
Speaker:OK.
Speaker:Okinawa is also known for its unusually high concentration
Speaker:of people that live over 100.
Speaker:The average age for women is 90 and for men is 84.
Speaker:So is it the tropical location?
Speaker:Is it the great weather, the Sandy beaches that allows these
Speaker:residents to live so long?
Speaker:That's what I thought until I discovered three things that they do
Speaker:differently than us north Americans.
Speaker:The first thing that the residents of OK.
Speaker:Okinawa do differently.
Speaker:Isn't tangible at all.
Speaker:It's something that we can all do, but it's hard to quantify.
Speaker:They call it your icky guy or reason for being
Speaker:my friend and fellow podcaster, Kavita Ahuja talks about this in her course.
Speaker:Take a listen to what she has to say about Iki guy
Speaker:as you can see, having a strong reason for being gives them meaning
Speaker:and a reason to live beyond 100.
Speaker:The second reason they live so long, not surprisingly is their diet, which consists
Speaker:of eating more vegetables and less sugar.
Speaker:I think we all need to eat more vegetables and less sugar.
Speaker:Now this is consistent with prevailing wisdom that eating a
Speaker:primarily plant-based diet and less sugar has multiple health benefits.
Speaker:however, there's another element to their eating habits that I found fascinating.
Speaker:This is that they only eat till they're 80% full.
Speaker:I can't tell you how many times I've been at a restaurant and obviously
Speaker:the serving sizes are a lot larger than what you would have at home.
Speaker:And somehow I manage to finish my plate.
Speaker:I don't feel great afterwards.
Speaker:And that is definitely not eating till I'm 80% full.
Speaker:This idea is counterintuitive.
Speaker:As many north Americans have been taught to always finish the food on their plate.
Speaker:You hear parents tell this to their children all the time and portion sizes
Speaker:here, keep getting larger and larger.
Speaker:It's refreshing to see a culture that discourages overeating the final reason.
Speaker:OK.
Speaker:Okinawans live so long is the strong emphasis they place on community.
Speaker:They take being part of a community or Moi.
Speaker:Very seriously.
Speaker:These social gatherings allow them to get to know each other to smile and to.
Speaker:Now, I'm sure you know, this, that children laugh significantly
Speaker:more than we do as adults.
Speaker:You've probably also heard that you are the average of the five people
Speaker:that you hang around with most.
Speaker:So if you're in a community where the average of the five people is a
Speaker:hundred years old and they're always smiling and they're always laughing
Speaker:and they just enjoy life, you are probably going to feel the same.
Speaker:I know after reading this article about icky guy and learning about
Speaker:the Okinawans, I definitely have a desire to live to a hundred or beyond.
Speaker:I hope you found this interesting and motivated you as well to live beyond 100
Speaker:tune in tomorrow where we'll be discussing how to become an expert and why you'd want
Speaker:to be seen as an expert in your industry.
Speaker:Thanks again, have an awesome day and I will see you tomorrow.
